Bernhardt Named World Championship MVP

COQUITLAM, B.C. — Jared Bernhardt was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 Federation of International Lacrosse Men’s U19 World Championship after helping lead the United States to its eighth consecutive title. Bernhardt, also named the outstanding midfielder, was one of five Team USA players named to the all-world team. He was joined by teammates Patrick Foley (defense), Austin Henningsen (midfield), Jack Rowlett (defense) and Michael Sowers (attack).
Bernhardt, a recent graduate of Lake Brantley (Fla.) High School headed to the University of Maryland, was Team USA’s top scoring midfield with 15 points (10g, 5a). His goal with 2:34 remaining in the gold medal game against Canada tied the score 12-12, setting the stage for Ryan Conrad’s game-winning goal with eight seconds remaining. Bernhardt’s older brother, Jesse, was a member of the 2014 U.S. men’s senior team.
Foley and Rowlett helped anchor a Team USA defense that allowed just 31 goals in six games. Foley, from St. John’s Prep (Mass.), just finished his freshman season at Johns Hopkins University where he started all 15 games. Rowlett, from Robinson (Va.) High School, won his second major championship in a span of less than two months. Rowlett started 17 games on defense for North Carolina, leading the team with 17 caused turnovers to help the Tar Heels win the NCAA championship.
Henningsen, from Northport (N.Y.) High School, was a dominant force on faceoffs for Team USA. Henningsen, who helped Maryland to the NCAA championship game as the Terps’ primary faceoff specialist this spring, won 66.7 percent (58-of-87) of his draws in the FIL U19 world championship, including a clutch second-half performance against Canada to help the U.S. rally from a six-goal deficit.
Sowers, a recent graduate of Upper Dublin (Pa.) High School headed to Princeton, tied Alex Roesner as Team USA’s leading scorer. Sowers had 22 points (11g, 11a) and his 11 assists led the team. Sowers had seven points (5g, 2a) in a round-robin victory over Australia and had a goal and two assists during a 5-1 Team USA run to open the second half of the gold medal game against Canada, helping to spur the United States comeback.
Bill Leahy, the longtime head coach at LaSalle College (Pa.) High School, served as the assistant manager for Team USA and was selected as the team’s Graham Lester Spirit of Lacrosse Award recipient.

Team USA Caps Golden Run With Stunning Comeback
by Sean Burns | LaxMagazine.com | Twitter | Box Score
Ryan Conrad scored a quick-stick goal off a feed from Simon Mathias with just 0:08 remaining in the fourth quarter to cap a wild 13-12 comeback for the Team USA in the gold medal game against Canada at the U19 World Championships in Coquitlam, British Columbia.
Team USA, which captured gold for the eighth time in the eight tournaments held for the junior men, found itself in a 6-0 hole early and was down 8-2 at halftime as Canada dominated early play looking to end the U.S. dominance at the event. But excellent face-off work in the second half from Austin Henningson and great play in net from Willie Klan helped Team USA battle back.
Mathias tied for the team lead with four points, scoring twice and assisting on two other goals. Michael Sowers (1G, 3A) also had four points. Conrad had two goals on the day, one of eight U.S. players with at least two points in the balanced rally.
Canada got three points each from Treton Leclaire (3G), Ethan Walker (2G, 1A), Jeff Teat (1, 2) and Curtis Riley (1, 2) and ten saves from Kyle Hebert in the losing effort. It fell just short of extending a tremendous recent streak of success in FIL tournaments, which has seen the Great White North hoist the trophy in every tournament since the U.S. Women's National Team captured gold in Oshawa, Ontario in 2013. Since then, Canada won the men's senior gold in 2015 and Women's U19 and Men's indoor gold last summer and fall, respectively.
Things were all Canada early, as Tanner Cook scored twice in a 4-0 first quarter, with Leclare taking over in the second quarter with all three of his scores to extend the lead, including a strike with less than 20 seconds remaining before the halftime break.
In the third frame, Team USA began chipping away. Alex Roesner scored two straight out of the break, with Mac O'Keefe, Michael Sowers and Mathias answering a Canada goal with a 3-0 run to make it a game midway through the quarter at 9-7. The teams traded goals over the latter half of the frame, with Canada holding a 11-8 lead going into the final frame.
Conrad broke a long scoreless streak with a goal off a Dox Aitken feed with just over 10 to play, but Canada answered right back to make it 12-9 a minute later. But Team USA kept coming. O'Keefe fed Timmy Kelly to make it a two-goal game with seven minutes left, then Mathias found O'Keefe with five minutes to go to make the deficit one. Jared Bernhardt took a Sowers feed with 2:30 left to knot the game at 12 each - the first time since Cook broke a 0-0 tie at 3:40 into the first that the teams were even and setting up Conrad's final strike.
On the day, eight of Team USA's 13 goals were assisted, including each of the five in the fourth quarter.
Corey McLaughlin will be back later with much more from this wild gold medal performance by Team USA.

Team USA Headed to World Championship Game

COQUITLAM, B.C. — Seven different players scored multiple goals, led by Alex Roesner with five, as the United States dominated Australia 23-1 to advance to the championship game of the 2016 Federation of International Lacrosse Men’s U19 World Championship. The U.S., the only nation to have won the championship since the event’s inception in 1988, will go for an eighth straight title on Saturday at 7 p.m. (Eastern) against Canada, which defeated the Iroquois Nationals 14-11.
Tyler Dunn scored just 2:21 into the game off an assist from Roesner and the U.S. never got off track. The U.S. led 7-0 after the first quarter, 12-0 at the half and 15-0 into the third quarter before Australia’s Sean Clarke scored his team’s only goal with 14:43 remaining in the third quarter.
Roesner (5g, 1a) and Michael Sowers (2g, 4a) led the U.S. attack with six points each, and Dox Aitken and Mac O’Keefe each had hat tricks. Aitken scored three of Team USA’s first nine goals. Jared Bernhardt (2g, 2a), Austin Sims (1g, 3a) and Ryan Conrad (1g, 2a) each had at least three points for the U.S. as well.
As it has done all tournament, Team USA controlled the faceoffs with Austin Henningsen and Christian Feliziani doing the damage. Henningsen won 7-of-11 and Feliziani winning 6-of-10. Willie Klan got the start in goal and played three quarters while making two saves and allowing just one goal. Philip Goss played the final quarter and blanked the Aussies while making one save. Australia went 0-for-6 on its extra man chances.
The U19 team is attempting to become the first U.S. team to win a world lacrosse championship since the U.S. women senior team won the World Cup in 2013. The U.S. senior men finished second to Canada in 2014, the U.S. women’s U19 team finished second to Canada in 2015 and the U.S. men’s indoor team won a bronze in 2015.
Saturday’s championship game will be streamed live at sportscanada.tv/2016worldlax/.

U.S. U19 Men Defeat England, 19-6

COQUITLAM, B.C. — Timmy Kelly scored three goals during the decisive second quarter as the United States of America broke a 2-2 tie with England to cruise to a 19-6 win at the 2016 Federation of International Lacrosse Under-19 Men’s World Championship today. Team USA finishes pool play with a 4-0 mark and the No. 1 seed in the single-elimination bracket.
The U.S. defense held England scoreless for 28:29, including the entire third quarter, as Alex Roesner scored three goals in that period (four overall) to help the Americans extend to a 16-4 lead. Team USA, which clinched a bye into Thursday’s semifinals with Monday's 17-3 win over the Iroquois Nationals, awaits the winner of a Wednesday quarterfinal that will pit Israel against the loser of tonight’s Australia/Iroquois Nationals pool-play game.
Thanks largely to Austin Henningsen (11 of 13) and Christian Feliziani (11 of 14), Team USA dominated faceoffs, negating England’s use of a ball-control, possession offense that wilted minutes off the clock at a time in some cases.
Two goals by Ryan Conrad, who also finished the game with three, staked the U.S. to an early lead, but England’s Austin Hudson answered with two to forge the first period tie. From there, Kelly took over. He sandwiched unassisted goals, the latter a rocket on a rebound following William Hudson’s uncontrolled save of a Henningsen shot, around a Michael Sowers-to-Jared Bernhardt score to give the U.S. a 5-2 lead.
Kelly later set a screen that Brad Smith used down the left alley to beat William Hudson, who played well with 14 saves for England, for a 6-3 lead. Up a man, Kelly delivered a dagger on the crease with about 10 seconds left in the half to put Team USA up 9-4.
Roesner scored two of his three goals within 5:06 of the third quarter as the U.S. wore down William Hudson. Meanwhile the U.S. defense, which communicated poorly after a Feliziani faceoff win and gave England an empty net for its fourth goal in the second period, shut down the England attack until the game was out of reach in the final quarter.
Team USA will play the first semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time Thursday. All games in the FIL U19 World Championship are being streamed live at sportscanada.tv/2016worldlax/.

U.S. Storms Past Iroquois to Clinch No. 1 Seed
By Brian Logue via USLacrosse.org
Randy Daly
COQUITLAM, B.C.. — The United States faced adversity for the first time in the 2016 Federation of International Lacrosse U19 Men’s World Championship, but responded for a 17-3 victory over the Iroquois Nationals behind a dominant faceoff performance. The victory clinches the No. 1 seed for the U.S. (3-0) and a bye into the semifinal round. The Iroquois fell to 1-2 entering tomorrow’s game against Australia that will determine the No. 3 seed in the Blue Division. Canada (3-1) has wrapped up the No. 2 seed.
Austin Staats scored the first two goals of the game for the Iroquois Nationals, and the U.S. was hit with a three-minute non-releasable penalty while trailing by the two goals. The Team USA defense killed off the penalty and Simon Mathias got the U.S. on the board midway through the first quarter. Staats got his third goal of the game with 5:42 left to give the Iroquois a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.
That would be the last goal of the night for the Iroquois as the U.S. scored the final 16 goals of the game, frequently playing make-it-take-it with a 21-of-23 performance on faceoffs. Austin Henningsen won 12-of-13 and Christian Feliziani won 8-of-9.
Mac O’Keefe scored less than two minutes into the second quarter and Jared Bernhardt tied it up soon after. Dox Aitken’s goal with 9:44 left in the first half gave the U.S. a 4-3 lead and they never let up. Alex Roesner and O’Keefe scored to give the U.S. a 6-3 halftime lead, and then the U.S. ripped off four goals in the first 5:22 of the second half to completely seize momentum against an Iroquois squad that lost a hard-fought battle against Canada the night before in a game that was delayed multiple times and ultimately played on three fields due to issues with the lights.
Roesner led the U.S. with five goals, O’Keefe had four goals, Mathias had three goals and two assists and Brad Smith had three assists. The U.S. goalies were rarely tested after the first quarter. Willie Klan started and played the first three quarters, making one save while allowing three goals. Philip Goss played the final quarter, but did not see any shots on goal.
The U.S. was whistled for three penalties for five minutes of penalty in the opening quarter, but the Iroquois failed to convert any of the chances.
The U.S. will have its first back-to-back games of the tournament when it plays England on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (Eastern) in its final pool play game.
As the No. 1 seed, the U.S. receives a bye through Wednesday’s quarterfinals, and will play the first semifinal game on Thursday at 7:30 pm (Eastern). All games in the FIL U19 World Championship are being streamed live at sportscanada.tv/2016worldlax/

Michael Sowers posted seven points in Team USA's 13-4 win over Australia. (Scott McCall)
Sowers Notches Five in Team USA's Win Over Australia
by Corey McLaughlin | LaxMagazine.com | Twitter | Box Score
COQUITLAM, B.C. — Incoming Princeton freshman attackman Michael Sowers scored five goals, one off the all-time single-game record for a U.S. under-19 men's national team player, in Team USA's 13-4 win over Australia in preliminary round play Saturday at the Federation of International Lacrosse U19 Men's World Championships.
In a game that at times grinded to a halt as the Aussies kept possession away from the U.S., Sowers struck quickly on the tail end of transition plays for many of his five. The U.S. U19 program record for goals in a game is six, scored by Dan Denihan in 1996, also against Australia. Nine others have scored five in an U19 men's international contest.
"Our defense is so good in the sense that they'll get a turnover, and the ball's up and out," said Sowers, a speedy, 5-foot-8, 165-pound quarterback-type attackman. "We're sitting down there and all you really have to do is catch the ball and put it in the back of the net. I found myself in a couple right positions."
Sowers also had two assists and was called in the crease twice after getting shots past Australian goalie Luke Dobson, who made 14 saves.
"I like to think I'm little bit of a spark plug," said Sowers, a recent graduate of Upper Dublin (Pa.), where he was coached by his father, Dave. "I try to play with as much energy and toughness every time I step out on the field."
The U.S. improved to 2-0 in pool play with a game with the Iroquois Nationals up next at 7:30 p.m. Pacific time Monday. The Iroquois face Canada at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Against Australia, Austin Henningsen (7-for-11) and Christian Feliziani (5-for-9) combined to go 12-for-20 on faceoffs. Alex Roesner had two goals and two assists and had a hand in the first three goals of the game. The Aussies scored four goals on eight shots they put on the Team USA combination of Willie Klan and Phil Goss, who split halves.
The U.S. led 7-1 at halftime and 10-3 at the start of the fourth quarter and went 3-for-6 on man-up chances. Sowers had three goals in the first quarter. His seven points was two away from the U.S. record of nine set by Jon Hess against Canada in 1996.
Gordon Purdie Jr., a rising sophomore at Adelphi where he plays for his father, had one goal and one assist. His father is also an assistant on the Australia U19 staff.

Team USA and Penn attackman Alex Roesner embraces the chip on his shoulder
by Mark Macyk | LaxMagazine.com | Twitter | U.S. Against the World
T
he University of Pennsylvania encourages its students to go outside the box and develop their own unique interdisciplinary educational experiences.
Alex Roesner, for instance, spent the second semester of his freshman year focusing on modern Canadian-American relations.
His self-taught course was almost entirely centered around 20 seconds of an exhibition game played this January in Florida. The U.S. U19 team trailed Canada by one with 20 seconds remaining in overtime of a wild, back-and-forth contest. Roesner came underneath, saw his shot, and let it rip.
It clanged off the crossbar. Canada ran out the clock and won 14-13.
"That last play has been on my mind all winter," Roesner said. "I tried to put it a little too high. An inch off."
This article originally ran in the June 2016 edition of Lacrosse Magazine. Don't get the mag? Join US Lacrosse today to start your subscription.
It shouldn't be something worth such rigorous independent study. It was a play in which Roesner did all the right things, at the end of an exhibition game that all memory of will be erased the second the Americans and Canadians open up the Federation of International Lacrosse U19 World Championship against each other July 7 in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Besides, he scored four goals, including the overtime winner, in Team USA's Blue-White scrimmage, last summer. No one doubts he can come up in a big spot.
But focusing on moments like the exhibition game is part of a very specific upper-body exercise Roesner does. It's designed to strengthen the chip on his shoulder.
"A lot of kids who commit early get complacent," Roesner said. "If you play like you have something to prove, it just sets you up for success."
The chip was implanted permanently early in high school at Loyola Blakefield (Md.), when two of Roesner's best friends recruited early to big-time programs. One was current U.S. U19 teammate Ryan Conrad (Virginia), who spent his high school career as the country's No. 1-ranked recruit. From that moment, Roesner used any perceived doubts about whether he was as good as his teammates to strengthen his chip.
"It puts a little pressure on you to succeed," Roesner said.
Roesner committed to Penn as a sophomore. He's happy with his choice, but said he still thinks the whole process starts too early. Earlier this year, an eighth-grader from Bay Shore, N.Y., committed to Penn State.
"You don't really know how someone is going to develop until at least their junior year in high school," Roesner said. "There's no way to tell how an eighth-grader is going to adapt."
But it could benefit teams that wait longer to recruit late bloomers. "A lot of people are going to fly under the radar," Roesner said. "In the end it's also a good thing, because it spreads things out and people end up at schools they may not have considered."
Penn turned out to be a perfect fit for Roesner. Team USA offensive coordinator Pat Myers also runs the Quakers offense. An offseason playing in Myers' motion scheme made the transition to college seem like an extension of the U19 training. Roesner finished the regular season fifth on Penn with 21 points.

The early success is no surprise. Roesner is a guy who wants the ball in his hands. But while he wants a chance to avenge the piped shot against Canada, he said won't hesitate to pass it up if it means putting the game away. In Coquitlam, the open player might just be his old buddy Conrad, who fed him the winning pass in the Blue-White scrimmage.
Penn played Virginia at the end of February. It was the first time Roesner and Conrad had squared off since middle school. They both scored two goals, but Virginia won by five. It ended up being more fuel for the chip.
"It didn't cross my mind until after the game," Roesner said. "I had time to think about it. It's obviously not fun to come out losing a game. And not seeing your friends from home for a while, it adds a lot of competitive fire. It makes you want to win that much more so you have bragging rights come the summer."
In the end that's all Roesner wants, to win. Because winning is fun. A permanent chip on your shoulder might seem like taking the fun out of the game, but Roesner does not think they're mutually exclusive.
"You can 100 percent have fun with a chip on your shoulder," he said. "When you look back on winning against people you worked harder than, it's the best and most alleviating feeling in the world."
He won't be the only American playing with a chip on his shoulder this summer. The U.S. teams are in a bit of a slump. The U19 men suffered their first-ever losses in international competition in 2012, falling to Canada and the Iroquois in the round robin before avenging both defeats en route to gold. The 2014 senior men and 2015 U19 women both were upset by Canada in championship games.
"We haven't proven anything yet," he said. "We should play with a chip. We have something to prove not just by beating Canada, but by beating them twice. And it's not just Canada. The game I focus on is always the next one. Canada is just the first one on the schedule."
